CHARACTER INTERPRETATION
» Appearance:
He is still young, having a very toned body from years of training as well as working construction. Raleigh is decently tall, muscular, and looks like an average white male. He's decent at fighting and does have some scars from a prior failed mission he doesn't talk about.

His actor is Charlie Hunnam

» Suitability: n/a

» Orientation: Unknown. As far as we know, he's straight, but they don't go into his sexuality at all. There is some interest shown towards his co-pilot Mako, but not much is flushed out.

» Personality:

Raleigh is the youngest Jaeger pilot and quite well known in his world. He's from the 2020's after the world has experienced an invasion of kaiju. After having a lot of success with his brother fighting them off, the young man did get a bit of a head about him, but that is quickly subdued when his brother dies.

Now despite being well known, Raleigh has a much quieter demeanor. The death of his older brother Yancy has effected him extremely. In the beginning he is shown on a construction site and even after trying to be recruited he doesn't react very much until he's comfortable. It even seems like it is hard for him to get attached. It's why he initially rejects the idea of going back. He even stopped fighting for awhile. He was mostly lost after it happened and slowly he actually gets a sense of hope. He lost everything after Yancy's death, but through being recruited again and his bond with Mako, he knows there's more to live for.

"All these years, I've been living in the past, never really thought about the future until now. I never did have good timing."

There are a few things that finally get him some motivation back. One is the realization that this is the last battle. Humanity doesn't have much backing it, but as he is reintroduced to the pilots and the base, he sees just how hard things have been hit. Also a lot of drive comes from his co-pilot who seems to have everything but herself figured out.

Mako Mako becomes his closest friend. She's introduced as someone who has researched him and knows everything about him, but he clearly has an interest in her. He's willing to stand up to his boss when he sees how compatible at fighting they are. She intrigues him, and he knows how much he needs a suitable co-pilot. She manages to bring the fight out of him once more. Because of the drift, he's able to see everything in her mind as well and knows exactly how the Kaiju have affected her life.

The drift is a way for two copilots to sync up in the jaegers, massive machines that fight the kaiju. It allows a person to connect mentally, seeing all that they are-- thoughts and past. Mako becomes his co-pilot. He's able to get more of an understanding for her past, not to mention how compatible they are. They are on the same level emotionally and mentally to be able to move and fight in tandem as well as they do. Besides Mako the only other person that has connected to him like this is his brother.

Raleigh may still be finding himself, but he really is a gentleman. Never does the film switch to him pursuing Mako. He knows what is at stake and everything becomes about saving the world, not getting the girl. Besides he's very traditional in the sense that when Chuck is rude, he doesn't take it. No one is disrespectful.

Raleigh knows his place and is very much someone who has gone through training. Pentecost is his commanding leader, and in many ways he looks up to the man. He's also intimidating as Mako's father. However one of Raleigh's motivations is his need to make things right, he challenges his superior on the call to make Mako his co-pilot. Regardless of if it puts her in danger, she is the best call for the job. He won't take anyone else and puts his foot down until Stacker sees what he means.

In that way he does know what he stands for on a root basis. He doesn't know what he wants out of life until it's all threatened, but when he does know something is right he won't back down. In that way he's very much lawful good. He will make sure that what he wants which is right and good will happen, as far as judging and calling out the commands of his superiors.

He also has a rivalry in Chuck, because Chuck is just as cocky as Raleigh used to be. While they don't get along because of this and the fact that Raleigh does call him out and kick his ass, they both are on the same team. Raleigh does recognize that he needs him as much as the world does.

Raleigh is very much in survival mode for the majority of the movie, and he is willing to do what it takes to save the world. He's definitely someone who has been enlisted, though he has his own standards to live up to as well. He's caring and gentlemanly, but can still be tough and kick some kaiju ass as well.

» First Person Sample Choice:
( prompt one: video )

[So he's managed to put on his pants, but none of this makes sense. He's shifting through his kaiju armor right now, but he doesn't remember this tech. Maybe he can call home? Have a shirtless Raleigh.]

Is this the Pan Pacific Defense Corps? This is Ranger Becket. I-- don't know where I am. [That's an understatement.] I was in the drift with Mori, and we slipped into the breach before--

[Before what?] There were two kaiju, and now I'm on some island? I don't know how I got here or where Mako is. Has anyone heard from Chuck or Pentecost?

[He kind of needs to know the fate of the world here.] Did we win?

[And on goes his shirt.]

Ranger out.

» Third Person Sample Choice:

( prompt two: waking up after sex dream )

He needed to get out of his apartment. Now. That dream had been so vivid, the way Mako moved on top of him. Raleigh had to blink, letting the cooler air hit his face. Being from Alaska this wasn't bad, but he knew the heat would get worse. That wasn't the bad part about this place. It was... everything else. It wasn't that he couldn't handle the sex. It was everything else that came with it.

Raleigh hadn't really made attachments to anyone or anything after Yancy's death. There was no reason when they all were going to die. But being recruited had started to give him a new direction. And then there was Mako-- although the thought just leads to thoughts of dream he had before and the needs to bury himself deep into her. He wanted to feel her ride him, to unravel before his eyes.

He started to run then, once the back door shut behind him. He needed to not think about that right now. There were a lot of great people on the island, people that had taken him in, but was he ready to make a family out of this place? Of course he wouldn't say no to them, that would be rude. But he did have his walls up, not ever saying much or delving into his past.

He had a family once and he lost his older brother. Now the one person that had made a connection to him was not here either, and despite the way his body seemed to react to the thought of her, he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do here now without her. She wasn't the most social, but being without someone who had experienced the drift with him was lonely.
